Team USA achieved silver medal at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, while Mary Lou Retton won the all-around gold medal by just 0.05 points, becoming the first female gymnast from outside of Eastern Europe to win the individual all-around gold. This was significant during the political climate of the time, and the high hopes America had for its team on the world stage in its own backyard.
